At first I was going to disagree with your about Booker Ervin, but as I thought about his series of records and compositions, I have to concur. He seemd to be more than just a leader in the studio which initially serves as a first cut in my book when you start using greatness in a stricter sense as it relates to artist. It is sort of like the difference between an artist and a craftsman. The craftsman may in fact be more "technically' capable, but he usually does not have the eye for what is possible (or in this case the ear / mind) of for what is just beyond the next logical step.
