There are two kinds of "individualistic" character on classical performance. One puts a stamp on the music, and often distracts the listener in regard to what the composer intended the listener to experience. The other tries to dig deeper into the composer's intentions, and shines additional light on what the composer intended. It is this second type of interpretation that many of us consider above the norm. And no two such performances shine that additional light in the exact same way.
In the first category, I'd put performers like Leonard Bernstein and Leopold Stokowski in. In the second category, I'd put performers like Wilhelm Furtwangler and Bruno Walter in.
And sometimes, great performers often have different ideas in regard to what they thought the composer intended to bring forth in the music. This is why many great performerances are easily recognizable, yet still put the composer front and center.
