I attended Chick Corea's solo perfromance in Toronto this Wednesday past. It was a fascinating perfromance, very eclectic, his wide ranging and complex improvisations seemingly blending elements of Impressionism, Avant-garde, and his muscular rythmic drive which it seems to me is a constant in his work.
I picked up New Crystal Silence at the show. It is a two CD set, one featuring the Duo alone, the other the pair with the Sydney Symphony.
I found the Corea & Burton alone CD reminicent of the solo performance, only that by himself the improvisations were noticably more adventurous and complex. Actually I can imagine some being more comfortable with the duo perfromances as the solo work was really out there. I suspect Corea realized as much when at the end of the first half he suggested that those who had "had enough" need not feel compelled to stick around. He need not have worried, Torontoians are not exactly flaccid Jazz fans, and I beleive it fair to say we let him know in no uncertain terms that the evening was enormously appreciated... and he returned the favor by playing for over 3 hours!
The orchestral performances are something very special indeed! Personally I suspect the symphonic version of La Fiesta will come to be recognized as a American Masterpiece sitting comfortably alongside Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue
