Man, I tell ya, Elis fans are as rare as hen's teeth in the USA so it's nice to encounter another! I have tracks from the Dois Na Bossa discs on a compilation, so I know some of the material, and yeah, it's killer. I've seen stuff of her on YouTube that spans her entire career, and I know what you mean about her being on the brink at times. Alo Alo Marciano has got to be one of the creepiest things on record by anybody given the coked-out vibe she gets across on that record, and then for her to die that way within a year. (In another interesting parallel, the Buckley disc contains a reference to a nightmare in which he "gets pulled under"--and how creepy is that for a guy who got tired swimming in the Mississippi and succumbed to the pull of the currents before his next album was done?)

Getting back to Elis, there is a CD box set that contains EVERYTHING she ever did for Philips, which is basically her entire career except for the last album or two starting with the "Essa Mulher" material. Oh, the Montreux date is not in there either. Still, at 16 CDs (I think), it's the ultimate Elis package. My friend David has it. He turned me on to her years ago. I have to admit I didn't get it right away, but then I was ga-ga. It was the "Dois" material that clicked with me first, especially Arrastao and portions of the Potpourri medley. I have LOTS of fave tracks by her, but it's always hard for me to come up with a recommendation for a "first" Elis disc. You almost have to go with a compilation disc (there's a good one called "Fascinicao") and follow what you like best from there. Interestingly, my wife does not care for Elis except for a few select tracks, mostly dating from before 1970. I'm wondering if Buckley will be a gateway for her. His rendition of "Lilac Wine" has that emotionally exhibitionistic quality that Elis could get into.

Well, if you're not going to try Buckley now, there's not much more I can do I think ;-)

Cheers!

dh
