"Flute" is a lighthearted comedy with some solemn moments (Sarastro's big aria), but mainly a fantasy, an entertainment. It contains some of the greatest and most difficult music for singers ever composed. I doubt your students could provide the likes of Wunderlich or Roswaenge for a Tamino, Pinza or Talvela for Sarastro, or Roberta Peters as the Queen of the Night. If you can't perform the music it makes little impression.
You like the last three Mozart symphonies? The Overture is a miniature symphony, equal to the composer's best and most mature. It takes a great conductor to bring it off, and maybe one was lacking in your student production.
"Flute" is a monument of Western culture, an inexhaustible treasure. Sorry it came across to you as less than that.
