Just about everyone agrees that Cleveland, Boston, Philadelphia, New York, and Chicago form what we call the Top 5 Orchestras in the States. Lately, it seems to me that these orchestras are merely riding on their past glories and have been long since they've slipped one by one into incompetent but arrogant groups of people. With the exception of Cleveland, I must say that Boston is far from first-rate, even with the new appointment of James Levine, Philadelphia keeps hiring amateur musicians, New York is not even on the map anymore, and Chicago completely lacks direction. I would say, however, that Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and San Francisco, have surpassed those mentioned above and have been consistent in making the right moves in terms of appointments and musical directions. I especially hope to see recordings from Baltimore concerts commercialized or through their own label. Any thoughts?
