Europeans are the world's worst performers of jazz. Anyone who has lived there for a while knows it. The reason is that with few exceptions "they ain't got that swing." The mere concept of syncopation seems alien to them and just forget about blue notes, it's not in their vocabulary. Listen to most French jazz musicians and you feel something isn't quite right. Germans are somewhat better. Eastern Europeans are probably the worst. To beocome a real jazz musician you have to learn to play an instrument well. There's a lot of discipline and practice. Few real good ones (yes I admit there are exceptions) are self taught or can't read music. But what is written down on paper is just the beginning and not nearly enough. Unfortunately, most trained musicians in Europe are taught to toe the line and play exactly what is written. That's been their culture for many hundreds of years. It doesn't make for good classical music and it's utterly horrendous in jazz. One jazz pianist I like very much is Marian McPartland. She's English although I think she's lived here much of her life. Now she's got that swing.
