Not a Kenny Kirkland fan either......

I'm just not connecting with these kind of pianists - more mathematics than sentiment. They seem to work most successfully in a higher energy context, but I don't get much melody or charm or touch out of their styles.

Keith Jarrett had all the chops but also the touch and the ability to break your heart. But he was a genius. Chops alone are not enough.

I still listen to Ahmad Jamal - he could get emotion out of the piano and went way beyond chops.

There have been some very nice European pianists too. I really like French pianist Thierry Eliez
