RE: Little help here, please

I start my radio program with a different version of Coltrane doing My Favorite Things, every Thursday at 5:00 am Eastern time. I have nearly 3 dozen versions. Original studio versions in both mono and stereo mixes, 3 different Newport gigs, various NYC clubs, various universities, more than a dozen European dates from tours in '61 and '62 and live in Japan. Some are melodic; others frenetic. Shortest just under 10 minutes; longest nearly an hour. Some with classic quintet; some with Dolphy; some with Sanders; some with Workmam; some with Haynes; some with Alice; some with Rasheed Ali; and others with miscellaneous other players. I enjoy them all and marvel at the differences. I agree with Andy Evans. The music speak for itself. You either get it or you don't get it.

Coltrane recorded it in 1960 (released March 1961) shortly after My Fair Lady hit Broadway. It became an almost instant Jazz standard. It has been covered over 600 times - some vocals/some instrumentals - albeit not all in the Jazz idiom. Some covers lean toward the original show tune interpretations; other clearly show the influence of Trane.

Ciao,
