If two weary, earthbound, female angels were to record a somber modern folk-pop album, this is what it would sound like. Hold On Love is, for now at least, the height of the collaboration between Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor, both of whom have since been releasing solo work. Breathy, dusky vocals, shot through with fatigue over the states of their human condition, the album still manages to maintain an inner light that prevents the proceedings from becoming utterly hopeless and depressing.
"Sea Of Doubts" is sublime, and demonstrates a stark fragility in the singers' harmonizing. Their live performance of this song had a chilling transcendence that isn't completely captured by the recording, but fortunately, much of the song's beauty is. "Look To Me" is sparse and acoustic guitar driven, and succeeds in establishing a bleak noirish feel. And to complete the hat trick of three-word-title songs, "If You Fall" has a bounce to it, and lightens the mood considerably. "Look To Me" and "If You Fall" are convenient examples because their tones bookend the album, none of the other songs are more down or up than these two, respectively.
