This is the time of year I pore over the best of 2007 lists. There was a lot I never heard.
Radiohead's In Rainbows was indeed a nice return to form. Lucinda Williams' West is another in a long string of fine releases, although nothing for me ever comes close to Sweet Old World.
My recent discoveries are listed in the title. I have become quite fond of Klaxons Myths of the Near Future. On paper, it's not my kind of thing at all, sort of verging on pretentious prog rock. But I like it a lot, play it a lot. Very melodic and pretentious or not, I like the lyrics.
PJ Harvey has entered deep dark water with White Chalk. It is a short and intense record. Very dark. Unusual vocals. Entrancing.
Iron and Wine has turned into a rocker. But he still has nice folky melodies. Shepherd's Dog is very very nice.
I'm just getting acquainted with Andrew Bird's Armchair Apocrypha. Good at first listen.
He may not be hip pop, but Neil Young's Chrome Dreams II is the best I've heard him sound since Rust Never Sleeps.
I have no strong opinion yet on Battles. Maybe innovative, maybe too much like old King Crimson. Not sure.
I'm still not done with 2007, but my impression is that it was a massive year in rock and related.
