Are we simply older and jaded or is today's mainstream pop and rock music really as superficial and disposable as we think it is? Ten years from now, "Billie Jean" will still be a good tune (Mikey's even stranger future self notwithstanding), but will today's chart-toppers have the same kind of lasting power?

I'm aware of my considerable bias, but I tend to think the problem isn't me, but the nature of today's music industry. Any thoughts?
