There is a significant difference in damping an enclosures walls by adding mass or a goey compliant layer, and damping the woofer by means of a port or fill material inside the enclosure. You failed to distinguish the difference between the two. Apparently the problem is with the enclosure walls vibrating too much. Damping enclosure walls will not result in an over damped bass sound.
