Re: Is there a way to shield interconnects?

24.64.81.191

Hi Jon,

I have also designed my own interconnects. My advice to you would be to check if the hum is really due to the cables. Try putting on a cheap interconnect such as the generic ones that come with VCR's etc. to determine if the same thing happens. Conversely, try it also with any other heavily shielded cables to see if it happens. The only reason I'm suggesting this is my uncertainty that the hum is not a result of some kind of a ground loop created by your unpowered preamp (only whenit is off).

I've constructed many unshielded cables that are far less noisy than many shielded ones. If noise is due to shielding problems (or lack there of) you would be able to hear the humming with everything powered on. In all cases, these noise problems have been aleviated by running the cable through different paths and making sure that all A/C cables cross interconnect and speaker cables at right (90 degree) angles. If you're happy with the way you DIY cable sounds, I'd try all of these techniques first for the very fact that once you start shielding cables, you can easily begin to hear the sonic character change to perhaps something less desireable. Extra shielding can easily rob a cable of it's high freq'y extension and make everything sound darker and less detailed.

Hope this helps.

Ken.
