When I was 5 or 6 and home from school for some reason, I taught myself to play the first several pages of Moonlight Sonata she happened to have on the piano. She had been taking lessons for 4 or 5 years and was not pleased at the head pats I received. We haven't spoke much since.
It's all memory and coordination which you either have or you don't. Trombone, OTOH, and Strings require skill and a keen (but not Viola) ear.
