Sporting renditions of Francis Scott Key's brilliant masterpiece are always sung incorrectly by the hip-chart-topping blowhard wannabe singers. Too many notes riffing through, too much "doing it my way"...Imitation, not interpretation, is the sincerest form of flattery. The glaring error that 98% of all National Anthem singers commit is singing the word "banner" as a four-syllable word with an ascending and descending run to "showcase" (cough) their supreme command of "melodicism" (choke, gag, die). Key is rolling in his grave every time this is murdered in this way. The proper three-note version is stoic, majestic in the best patriotic musical style, and is a major feature in Key's awesome composition. Alas, every hack star singer wants to riff it up to compete with that highly-overrated singer Whitney Houston.
I like O Canada. Less to fuck up or with.
