I agree with Black Star and Gates of Gold.
Black Star does get better with repeated listening. At first I was not sure what to think - I thought Bowie was trying too hard. I do think the bass is a bit too exaggerated. Bowie has put out lots of records that get old fast - luckily this one belongs among his best work. My favorites are the run from STATION to STATION to HEROES. Of course, HUNKY DORY and ZIGGY STARDUST, too.
Gates of Gold is endearing from the start and continues to get played often. Hard to believe that a band that has been playing so long still can still be this good. It doesn't happen very often in my experience.
My other favorites for the year:
Teens of Denial - CAR SEAT HEADREST - great pop music.
Human Performance - PARQUET COURTS everything comes together for them on this record.
West Kirby County Primary - Bill Ryder-Jones - out of the blue ...
The Singing Saw - Kevin Morby A surprise from a fellow whose favorite songwriters are Dylan and Lou Reed. If this is "Americana" I guess I do not hate "Americana" after all. Not sure how it is classified but this is a very good record.
