It's all about how well any given form of amplification deals with the load of the speaker, and whether or not the sonics of the two compliment each other to your ears.
No one amplifier is great with every pair of speakers. You can find the right speakers for just about any half-decent amplifier, and vice-versa. Just takes some auditioning. Trouble is, some amplifiers can take (up to) a couple of weeks to adapt to any given speaker load. I have witnessed this on a number of occasions.
