I think your posting carries within it a linguistic difference worth commenting upon. That is the difference in the term "music lover" and " audiophile." I question the assumption that these terms are referencing the same thing. To be a music lover is to love music. Certainly people do not have to be obsessed with audio equipment to love music. Before Edison, there was NO recorded sound of any kind. Were the devotees of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven not music lovers?
Another poster already addressed many of the causes of the decline in interest in audiophile equipment. I don't think young people love music less than any other generation of people. They just consume their recorded music in different ways than do we audiophiles. They like portable compact sources, like iPods, or streaming. My sons both grew up in a home with an enthusiastic audiophile yet neither of them has any real interest in audio equipment. They both love music however.
