While we mourn the passing of Dead Or Alive's Pete Burns, it was 30 years ago, during the Fall 1986 semester, where we enjoyed their "Brand New Lover."
I don't recall why we were going into my high school's auditorium, also dubbed for alumna Carol Channing. But with our Walkmen in tow, we absolutely loved "Brand New Lover's" bubbling, girder beam bassline. Naturally, there was always some girl (or boy) who'd remark, "How can we get a new lover, if we don't have one to begin with?"
I myself happened to be a sophomore, but the school as a whole was starting to get into consumer electronics. Whether we got "Brand New Lover" on vinyl, cassette, or later, CD, it was an absolute torture test for audio products. First of all, most source components failed to get it right. And once you finally found a source which did justice to "Brand New Lover," preamps, power amps, and receivers, then so woefully inaccurate, lost the beat. And let's not get started on speakers, most of which fell flat on their face.
So please do Pete Burns a favor. 90% of high-end audio products cannot get "Brand New Lover" right. If you are stuck with this 90%, purge it. Find that 10% which does not f--- it up, and then just nail all your dance moves!
