RE: It is.

I still don't see the assembled LXmini for $800. Do you have a direct link?

In my experience, building the LXmini is about $800 after plans, runs to the hardware store, upgrading to the 2x4 HD (the only minidsp kinda worth a damn) and adding in the wood cut bits. Regardless, it isn't really fair to compare the cost of parts to a completed product in any form. Restaurants don't pay $12 for those burger ingredients, and KEF sure as hell isn't paying anywhere near $25k for 10 drivers and a Blade cabinet. I think it is awesome that the LXmini kit is available for so cheap, and, like I said, I send people that way quite often.

I still don't see where the butchering part comes in, however. The driver change wasn't just a random swap, it was part of a ground up passive/active redesign that meant we had to throw out every piece of engineering and CAM work for the entire unit. The only thing that didn't change, actually, was the SEAS woofer, and even that was radically reworked for a flush mount and more secure attachment.

The driver change was also much more than just changing a transducer. We had to figure out a passive crossover approach to have any hope of reaching the traditional audiophile market and it was effectively impossible to do with the number of filters needed for the SEAS full range. The Fostex allows us to run a very high detail full range without a high or low pass and layer in the woofer and tweeter. Since most of what we hear in terms of inner detail and clarity comes from that driver, that means we get nearly identical result from our passive and active configurations. Keeping the option to reconfigure for active also means we give people an upgrade path that can be a lot less painful than being forced to buy a 4 or 6 channel amp right up front and decide on DSP/DAC options.

MikeCh, were you one of the guys who heard them at RMAf this year? I have had a lot of conversations with Linkwitz fans and LXmini/521/Orion owners (myself included among them) and not one who has heard our work has felt that we have negatively affected the sound in any way. If you have not heard them yet, let me know. I will do my best to see if we can get you to a demo in your area (assuming it is in the US).
