You've unfortunately discovered the great problem with REL subs. The amps are difficult to repair if at all, REL USA is useless and REL doesn't even supply schematics to distributors let alone make them public. Stock on replacements is also non-existent.
You have a good idea in using a separate amp and plugging the hole. Or if you find a suitable plate amp (and there have been good ones mentioned) you could have an adapter plate made from wood or metal to adjust the size.
Here's some more suggestions. FYI prices are Canadian so you could knock off about 25% in exchange rate.
