General audio topics that don't fit into specific categories.

Sometime but not always...

Having the chance to visit quite a few shows over the years I can certainly agree that not all mega-buck gear suits my taste.

Most of my favorite rooms at CES/T.H.E., RMAF, HE-2000whatever and other shows I've attended, were not necessarily the ones with the most expensive gear.

But few if any of the REALLY good sounding rooms had inexpensive gear.

I've also had the luxury of visiting quite a number of other 'audiophiles' listening rooms where years of effort have gone into gear selection and setup. Again, seldom are the really good sounding rooms filled with inexpensive gear.

Exceptions might be back in the day of the first couple years of RMAF when DIYers were more actively involved. Can recall Ron Welborne's room and Doc Bottlehead's sounding very good. Also a number of small manufacturers such a Dehavaland(sp?) and Cain & Cain had great sounding rooms with moderate to reasonably high priced gear but far from mega-buck.

Also recall at one early RMAF where Brian Cherry of DIY-HIFI Supply was showing a WE-91 replica kit with some German made (Bastani?) open baffle kit speakers. One of the best sounding rooms at the show, at least with the types of music that the system was being demoed with.

Still feel the best way to decent sound on a budget is DIY. I go to these shows at least as much to hang out with friends as to hear mega-buck systems I can't afford.

First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass
