FWIW I started a similar audio group in SE Michigan about 11 years ago. It's almost totally informal - we meet once a month and talk audio gear, music, and life. No member dues, no formal sales pitches - though we've had a few optional events.
Initially, I posted here, on audiokarma, and on audiogon about the idea and simply requested that folks email me and I'd put them on a mailing list. Our first meeting was about ten interested folks at my house. Since then we've grown to over 200 members, and we've met every month for the last 11 years!
I absolutely love the friendships I've been able to make through the group during all these years. It's been the best thing for me in audio. I highly recommend you continue your quest.
