RE: When Did Audio Cables Become A Component

While the advent of audiophile cables began in the late 1970s, it took many years before the status of audiophile cables was considered more than just an accessory, and more so that of a vital component. The exact date of any movement stating the issue of "cables matter" is debatable, but from a marketing and end-user POV, it took a separate dedicated audio product type category outside of the accessory department, and online discussions before the notion of cables as components became a more established consideration, rather than a controversial esoteric audiophile concept vs. a popular worldwide consumer audio product type category.
