What's wrong with a lav? It has the right pick up pattern, is small and unobtrusive. As long as the battery didn't die on you or you broke the fine wires, you were good to go.
You can't point 6 shotguns at panel discussion....unless folks are trying to get more union jobs.
Seeing as how the engineer who bought those headsets couldn't have tried them out in a real live loud situation, he was probably sold a bill of goods. Not too many ways to test that kind of stuff out.
