Convention Commentator Audio

If I remember correctly, on the first night of the Republican National Convention, all of the "panelist/commentators" were wearing the little ear-mounted microphones and in-ear monitors. Plosives were constantly an issue, especially with some of them, notably Amy Walter. There also seemed to be an issue with the commentators being able to hear well, due to the crowd noise and audio from the podium speaker. I think it was the second night when the audio team switched to headsets with a mic that has a thicker windscreen. This certainly did help to mitigate the situation, but it still wasn't clean. I think Gwen Ifell was the lone holdout still using the original setup, but it was a couple of others who still had issues with plosives.

Tonight, at the Democrat convention, I noted that they were still using the same "plan B" mics/headsets, and Gwen Ifell was still using the original setup, and that there still were issues with plosives for a couple of commentators.

Seriously? On a national broadcast? They can't come up with a system to avoid this? Helloooo - can any of their audio "engineers" say "limiter", even if they can't find better microphones?

PBS/NPR should pay attention to and learn from ABC and NFL Sports. Heck, as an audio "engineer", I have shortcomings, but even I can avoid excessive plosives from mucking up the audio.

I know, I know, this isn't an important topic for most audiophiles. Still, I had to mention it.

:)
