Late in the Spring '86 semester, my friend and classmate Lily had Nu Shooz's Poolside on cassette. With her hair in a pony tail, she was bopping along to "Point Of No Return," which, at that time, was months before it was released as a single.
Back then, my schoolmates called me "Ugly Kid John," or the ugly duckling, who never turned into a swan. One of our friends with braces joked to Lily, "Hey, you should go for Lummy. He's actually better-looking than you. Upgrade! Plus, you have the same last name [Chinese characters, not English]."
Lily wanted to tell him, "F--- you," but she was too nice of a person.
In a large and competitive high school like ours, everyone's a jerk to each other. But not Lily. Not only was she nice to everyone, she was, for all 4 years, nice to me. I never had to be self-conscious around Lily. And during all 4 years, I could drop what I was doing, and share a Walkman or, in later semesters, Discman with Lily. It didn't matter what music she and I listened to. She always let me bounce along with her.
But never mind all that. Nu Shooz's "Point Of No Return" is simply a very enjoyable song.
