During the Spring '87 semester, my classmate Scott (we were both high school sophomores) was one of the first to get a CD player. He had bought some Quasar personal CD player.
At that time, San Francisco record stores stocked lots of cassettes, but were finally replacing vinyl with CDs. Alas, even on sale, CDs were $11.99 -- a princely sum for high school students.
One of the first CDs Scott had was Expose's eponymous album. Via the Quasar, and regardless of which headphones we used, "Point Of No Return" sounded flat, lifeless, and dull. While that kind of sound still appeals to today's Stereotypical Audiophiles, it sucked then, it sucks now.
Unfortunately, and as expected, the vinyl of Expose's debut sucks. It sports unstable imaging, raked textures, and that awful upper midrange warble.
The Miami dance sound of Expose should be glossy, energetic, and FUN! Our female classmates should be inspired to lead the dance(s). What a sin, that audio electronics butcher this music.
