RE: Hearing aids...

I was a board certified hearing instrument specialist. There's nothing above 12K going to be coming out of a hearing aid. Almost every test will only test to 10K. But hearing aids can still help HF hearing.

First if you are 72 and your HF rolls off at 12K you are in quite a select group. I'm going to doubt your hearing is flat that high. The resonant point of the outer ear is about 3K so there are less than three full octaves above the point in the best of human hearing. There are more than twice as many below 3K.

The toughest thing is going to be finding someone that really understands audio and hearing aids audiologist or not. For hearing aids to sound good with music they need to be programmed one way, to work well in a noisy restaraunt requires different programming and then a general one size fits all setting would be yet another way.

Good aids have three or more programs. The audio program should have no compression but the programs to clarify speech should. Good hearing aids split the audio spectrum so compression can be set properly for each sector. All good aids have about 16 tone controls like an EQ to compensate for ones weaknesses.

Depending on your loss you may be able to use open fit. These are more comfortable and tend to have a more natural sound. The best have what's called receiver in the canal where the speaker ( oddly always referred to as a receiver in hearing aid speak) is in the ear canal pointed directly at the ear just a couple mm from the ear drum. All other hearing aids have the speaker in the aid and then a tube sometimes with large bends in it ( not good for HF) pointed at the ear drum.

Since the product doesn't vary that much between vendors finding someone that knows any thing is the most important thing. Good hearing aids cost a lot The very good ones are above $5K a set. Luckily there are laws in all states that allow a refund usually up to 60 days.

If you have any specific questions ask me.
