I have attended in recent years are by relatively unknown artists (to my generation - WWII war babies) in small venues without a lot of amplification, but great spirit.
I'm thinking of the likes of M Ward, Howe Gelb, Clem Snide, Over the Rhine, various reincarinations of Stephen Malkmus, The Mountain Goats, etc., where the performers make the show, not the electronics or the fireworks displays.
