Lifeless concerts - are digital amps killing live music?

I just came back from another concert in a large arena. The artist was a well renown folk singer with a great backup band consisting of legendary musicians.
To my relief the volume levels were moderate and there was no need for earplugs.
Great classics.

Sadly it was another amplified live show that left me (and probably most of the audience based on their reaction) completely stone cold with little to no musical enjoyment.
I have been observing this trend for quite some time now where despite decent acoustics, volume, clarity of sound the overall performance of good artists is completely lacking in soul.
I have also noticed it in smaller venues.

This is not about acoustic nuances, reflections or other imperfections, every venue will have its issues, not really looking for any high end here. This is about a sound that is emotionally empty.

Looking for possible causes one thing that comes to mind is prevalence of digital amps in the current PA systems. They offer great power/weight ratio plus other logistical benefits for the live audio industry but is it possible this could be the culprit?

I have owned few digital amps in a past and know that one has to work little harder to make them sound musical and they can be very sterile.

Wondering if others have observed this phenomenon as well.
