When I attended Case Western Reserve in 1980-81, I became good friends with a Cleveland Institute of Music oboe student named Mark DuBois. He was one of those beaming types, cracking jokes whenever he could. (I thought he was a very promising oboe player.... I don't think he ever made it to a major orchestra.) I've often met up with him at Cleveland Orchestra concerts at nearby Severance Hall......
In 1981-1982, I decided to go to school a lot closer to my California home, University of California at Santa Barbara..... During the summer, I opted to take some classes, I had some spare time, I decided to check out some music recordings at the UCSB library.... While waiting in line to check out the music, I noticed the back of someone in that line that looked really familiar..... I then make a "derogatory" comment about the oboe, and he turned around, Mark DuBois with his beaming smile. Small world....
Oddly, I returned to Case Western Reserve the following year, and graduated there in 1985..... But never saw Mark again since that "small world" moment in Santa Barbara.
