The Onkyo has a pre out section on the back with a subwoofer out single RCA connection that is to be hooked into the powered sub. I'm sorry if I'm not being clear. It has been connected this way since I got the receiver approx.6 yrs ago. I don't know about low volume, but yes, distotion at med & (semi)hi volume. The distortion rises & falls with the receivers volume control. Thanks, Dave
