Subwoofer distortion

Hope it's okay to post here, wasn't sure, sorry if it's wrong forum. So I have an older Klipsch KSW12 powered sub hooked to my Onkyo HT receiver, pre-out to the subs LFE in. Been fine for Blu-ray/satellite radio & "regular tv" for years now. My front speakers are bookshelf DIY. The other day I noticed that any tv program with substantial bass made a horrible distorting sound from my sub. Volume was normal, sub volume was set same as has been forever as is the low pass set at 80 hz. Nothing has been changed as far as the receiver settings. all connections were secure. I put on the "Master & Commander" Blu-ray because I knew it had a lot of bass for me to check things out. Same distortion although more pronounced. I thought maybe my Klipsch had given up the ghost, so I replaced it with a spare Audiosource PSW 112 I had still new in box in my garage (bought 2 from Parts Express for $100 on sale couple yrs ago). Much to my dismay, same deal. I've done all I know to do, even replacing my front DIY's with a pair of Michaura bookshelves, just in case (?). I have no idea now except to think maybe something awry with my receiver? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. TIA, Dave
Everyone thinks I'm strange except my friends deep inside the earth
