You should have a line input which would be better than the mic input. Also you can control the input level and if you only have a mic in make sure the mic boost is unchecked. In Windows this is in recording properties. Mac or PC? What OS? Also you'll likely need an 1/8th inch male mono to 1/8th male stereo cable.
