RE: "Stereo plus Mono" OR stereo with mono center channel...

...to fill in the "hole in the middle". The center channel was driven by summed L+R or mono signal. This was a fairly common higher end setup in that era and many top end preamps provided a summed line level output for just this purpose. The pictured Mac C22 has such an output complete with a separate level control to adjust the balance of the center channel to match the L & R channels.
