Referring to changing something and coming out different but no closer to the goal.
A+ for Peter Walker's wisdom.
That said, for a recording really to lock in, I think it is almost a complete necessity that it have been recorded with a very simple stereo mic set-up, and it should go without saying that gain-riding within recording or mastering makes it very hard to hit the target.
