"tried several brands"

Hi Jack, sorry to see you didn't find any success.

I've owned two different brands (different design models) and tried others each time before deciding. NONE of those were acceptable for music listening with the manufacturer's recommended settings. I guess we are too individual and there are too many variables for an easy "one size fits all" solution.

I've mentioned previously that for me it was a reiterative process (with both my first and my current aids) of fine tuning the respective frequency level settings, masking, and directionality. While my audiologist was very knowledgeable and otherwise well equipped, they did not have a playback system which allowed relevant feedback from me (it was a home theater in a box!). So I'd go in for adjustments, then come home to listen on my system and also hopefully to some live music, then go back with my observations for further adjustments. This can be a time consuming and even frustrating experience but with both aids I've owned I've been rewarded with a reasonable impression of real voices and instruments.

For the average person being fitted with hearing aids the manufacturer's settings may prove adequate. But a curse for an audio hobbyist can be experience in critical listening which means fine tuning will likely be necessary for any reasonable satisfaction.
