my company unabashed measurement excellence.
We used 2 closely spaced 4955 microphones that themselves have a low 5dBA noise floor. In the data acquisition we use 2 x 24 overlapped A/D converters par channel giving us a 150dB+ linear dynamic range, and then in the analysis we perform what is known as a coherent power cross spectrum measurement - which with a little averaging forces the non coherent noise products that remain in the microphones and electronics to drop from a nominal 2µV level to approx. 30nV level. all that remains is the ambient noise levels from outside sources.
Interesting, the same analysis technique can be used to isolate all the non coherent noise products that create themselves from input to output of and piece of electronics - using ANY test signal or music signal.
Of course if that measurement showed no (-100+dB) difference between the input and output of a cable it's obviously the measurements fault.
or perhaps that is the way a cable is suppose to work - and they can sound different because it is its implementation in the system that causes the system to sound different with different cables.
