Option to consider

Earl you say he doesn't want "cans" but maybe you might convince him to give them a try? I'm thinking some reasonably priced "on ear" type so he can still hear other things in the house.

Does he live alone? If there is anyone else in the house then adaptations that help him but reduce quality for others may not be a good idea.

My dad had hearing aids but the time came when it was no longer reasonable to turn up the TV volume for his needs. So I found a small integrated amp (actually at Radio Shack) and with a long interconnect from the TV and the least expensive Grado 'phones he could adjust the level he needed right at his recliner chair and hear fairly well.
