Simpler is better as far as lulls and peaks are concerned...

Could it be that the simpler the system is, the more *often* it sounds good? I am tempted to believe that the answer to this question is "yes".

Has anyone else noticed this to be true?

Specifically, I'm being tempted to think that cables are one of our most potent enemies. The number and type of cables in use seems to be directly proportional to how often my system sounds really good, so I've been moving toward the use of simpler and more integrated solutions. Integrated amps and receivers, active speakers, headphone systems will continue to be on the horizon for me.

Also, using only one type of source component per system seems to sound better than using two or more different types. My vinyl rig seems to sound better when my digital rig has been removed from the system, and vice-versa. Once again, fewer cables and/or fewer components overall seems to be the ticket to best sound quality.

Mind you, I'm not suggesting that the very best sound always comes from the very simplest systems. I'm only thinking that fewer parts (especially fewer cables) enables more consistent results. Reducing or eliminating the use of annoying antennas.., er, "cables" in my system seems like as good place to start as any.
