RE: What sound changes when going from carpet to hardwood floors?

There is no reason why the floor needs to be the only absorbing surface in a room. If you want hardwood floors, put them in. Place a high pile area rug between the speakers and listening position to attenuate the floor bounce, and then add absorption to the walls and/or ceiling until you've eliminated any slap echo and restored your system's balance.
