Having heard all the excuses, I must say that the best sound I heard in my impressionable youth was a Spendor bc1/ naim system playing the LP of tchaikovsky piano trio (Beaux Arts) set up live end/dead end with lots of drapes and cork tile (!) at the Montreal show in the 70's. It raised the hair on the back of my neck.
While today it would be sneered at as mid-fi, the high end stuff rarely has that effect on me any more. And they blame the room.
