I've yet to see an MP3 file get "eaten" by an MP3 player.... Or develop dropouts and lost HF over time.... Analog cassette storage was temporary, and unlike MP3, even mainstreamers noticed a degradation in sound quality relative to the primary marketed format of its day (vinyl).
And even the players themselves degraded in performance over time. Almost unavoidable..... There are countless "high-end" cassette players that have become "boat anchors"....
Such degradation and "temporary" nature of analog cassette had prevented the "piracy" issues that are epidemic today.
In contrast, an MP3 (or other digital file format) recorded today should hold up for 50 years or more.... Without any sonic degradation.... And can be copied hundreds of times with just a click of a mouse.... This is where the "piracy" has kicked in.
