The bottom end for a decent mic is about a hundred dollars. 'Course, you'll need a way to connect it, too. The Shure SM57 and SM58 are decent, but may not have the characteristics you want or need. Somebody here mentioned a 'shotgun' mic. Depending on your needs, that may be a good solution. The venerable Electro-Voice 635A (an omnidirectional mic) is built like a tank, and you could probably find a used one for $50 or less. Radio and TV stations bought them by the dozen.
This all brings me to: What are your needs? Specifically: Type of audio to record, distance to the source, voice or instruments, etc., etc.
Lastly, if your audio quality needs aren't especially great, there are relatively inexpensive mic preamps which have a variety of features. Look at products from Mackie, Presonus, Yamaha, and others.
