You should go online and read a tutorial about recording before you do anything. You need to consider:
Room Acoustics
Mic Placement
and several other things. Also give us detail. What does sounds like crap mean? Overdriven and distorted? Lower the record volume. Too much back ground and ambient room noise? Get the mic closer to the person and their mouth. Use a mic boom. So I would give us detail about what sounds like crap is and read about making recordings between Youtube and a search engine you'll find lots of info.
As to the USB mic it probably isn't very good but ould likely sound similar plugged into the sound card. What did it cost?
