While I appreciate the sentiment, I don't agree with everything Karl Paulnack writes, the most important being his recounting of the the Messiaen story. In World War II, Messiaen was captured and sent to Stalag VIII-A - a POW camp, NOT a concentration camp. I'm afraid this type of embellishment is all too typical of many modern academics. I'm also very suspicious when he suggests that Messiaen might have been tortured in the camp (although I'm not entirely sure - I did one of my doctoral projects on Messiaen's Catalogue d'oiseaux, but I don't remember about this particular point). In any case, why can't this Paulnack guy just let the facts stand on their own without jazzing them up? In a way, I'd think that this type of exaggeration would be insulting to actual concentration camp victims.In addition, when he states that "serious music. . . has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with entertainment, in fact it's the opposite of entertainment", then I start to feel that the guy is getting a little bit full of himself. Does he really think that if Quatuor pour la fin du temps were not entertaining, we'd even be bothering to perform it or listen to it today?
If this guy is running things at Boston Conservatory, then I'm glad that I don't know anyone who's gone there - again, like many other academics, he strikes me as someone who's entranced with his own thoughts (no matter how ordinary), and if I were a student there, I could never be sure that what I "learned" from his teaching had any actual basis in reality.
