It's a short wall, not a column. Great place to put a TV, although I think it could be a little wider.
Without that wall, it's just one big, very difficult to use room. Looks like a family room, possibly in a walkout basement. I could see a card table or a pool table set up in the adjoining small room that the wall creates.
