I made a big mistake 15 years ago when I traded in my TNT/ET2 on a $15k table that HP and the whole passel of reviewers from TAS and Stereophile were mooning over (Versa Dynamics). The Versa lasted almost a year before it, Versa Dynamics (the company) and my dealer all went belly up at about the same instant. After a few years, I found a shop that claimed to be able to fix it and waited for 10 years (without vinyl) before giving up and buying a bargain VPI Super Scoutmaster on Audiogon. When it arrived, it was missing a couple of things - the motor assembly and SDS unit and VPI's price to bring it back to life was $2200 for the motor and $1200 for the SDS. When I called VPI to see what options I had to at least get some kind of motor for it, they put Harry on the phone and by the time I finished telling my story, he sounded almost in tears at how sad it was. He called me back the next day to tell me that he had walked through his shop and taken an SDS and a 2 motor flywheel assembly from his QA lab and had his people do a complete refurbish on it and the SDS - including repainting the motor housing and made them available to me for such a huge discount (I promised never to reveal the price), and threw in a set of new belts, lube, protractor and a few other things normally supplied with a new unit, just to get me started. What makes this an even bigger deal for me was that at the time, he was in the middle of moving his shop to a new location and most of his equipment, inventory, supplies, machines, etc. were already packed up or on trucks for the move when he got involved in helping me out. Thanks again, VPI for all your help.
Everything is going to the dogs
